Jim suggests using an uninterruptible power supply instead of those standard surge protectors (no more than a multiple outlet strip).

The big benefit from a UPS is the superior line stabilizer that is incorporated into the circuitry. With the frequent power spikes (brownouts) we have here, it WILL save your power supply and motherboard from damage.
